Change... Adapt

I think everyone should watch Hitch, a delightful romantic comedy that is amazingly both romantic and funny, surpassing the quality of most films in this genre. It stars Will Smith, Eva Mendes, Amber Valetta and a very funny Kevin James. Basically, Will Smith plays a modern-day Cupid - he uses creative ways and methods to help geeky, awkward men meet and woo the women they've been ardently admiring from afar.

Although most of the film was pretty light and fluffy, one scene that I identified with was when Kevin James' loser accountant character, after scoring 3 wonderful dates with the love of his life, the super-beautiful Amber Valletta, loses it all due to the scandal and controversy erupting over Will Smith's role in the matchmaking. He is devastated; with no one else to turn to, he shows up at Smith's apartment to lament his broken heart. At one point, he says to Smith that he can't imagine living on with this hole in his heart. And then Smith replies, "No, you don't have to live on like this. You can change. You can adapt. You can make it so you never have to feel this way again."

Shocked, James observes that the romantic Cupid is actually a cynic who has had his heart broken before and is now too cowardly to make himself vulnerable to that feeling again. I identify with it cos it's so true... after experiencing your finger chopped off, you hardly ever want to put your hands out again. But the interesting thing is, we do have to stick our necks out in order to really love. Otherwise we'll just be accepting emotional mediocrity, sailing along without any lows, but without any true highs either. For me, I'd rather take the risk and embrace genuine feeling and loving ;) Maybe that's what makes true love so precious - the fact that you have to risk so much to achieve it. Interestingly, there is a Biblical analogy - in Luke 7, Jesus observes that those who have been forgiven much, love much, and those who (think) they have been forgiven little, love little. In the same way, only those who risk a lot, will know true love. Here's to lovin'!
